| ASL Instructor -- Turiya Levy |
||||
| About the Instructor Turiya Levy learned her first sign from a center fold in the the Children's World Magazine when she was about 8 years old. Since then, she was captivated and pursued learning sign in high school and college. In 1995 and 1996 she worked at the Austine School for the Deaf in Brattleboro, Vermont. As with any language, immersion was the best way for Turiya to gain fluency. Turiya has been signing with her 16 month old son, Miguel, since infancy and is amazed at the communication that has been possible before Miguel has even spoken a single word. Turiya says, "Signing has allowed Miguel to show us how much he understands and what he is thinking about." Turiya has a elementary school teaching certification and prior to Miguel's birth, was teaching fourth grade. She lives with her husband, Marcos and son, Miguel, in Shrewsbury Vermont.
